Originally recorded in 1992, Det som engang var is the sophomore masterpiece from Burzum, widely considered a definitive milestone in the history of Norwegian Black Metal. This 2010 Byelobog Productions reissue comes in a high-quality jewelcase with a protective o-card.

Building upon the raw foundation of the debut, Det som engang var showcases a more focused Varg Vikernes, displaying superior layering and atmospheric depth. From the vicious hatred of “Key to the Gate” to the hypnotic, trance-inducing melodies of “En ring til å herske” and the catchy, folk-influenced rhythms of “Lost Wisdom”, the album is a textured journey through mystical and arcane worlds.

This release also features some of Burzum’s earliest ambient explorations, such as the medieval-inspired “Han som reiste”, further expanding the boundaries of the genre. The production remains raw and the vocals unbridled, yet the magisterial songwriting summons visions of pristine Nordic landscapes and ancient planes of existence.
