Hvis lyset tar oss is widely regarded as one of Burzum’s defining works and a cornerstone of the Norwegian black metal scene. Originally released in 1994, this 2010 Byelobog Productions jewelcase (o-card) CD reissue presents Varg Vikernes’ first fully realised vision of hypnotic, minimalist extremity.
Built on long, repetitive structures rather than technical showmanship, the album creates an overwhelming, dreamlike atmosphere. The opening epic “Det som en gang var” and closing ambient piece “Tomhet” frame the record with two 14‑minute journeys, while the title track and “Inn i slottet fra droemmen” offer colder, more direct black metal assaults.
Guitars, synth and harsh vocals blur together into a dense wall of sound, where subtle shifts in melody and texture slowly evolve over time. The result is a bleak, immersive experience that helped define what atmospheric black metal would become for decades to follow.
