Together they are an unbreakable monument that has shaped the entire second wave of Norwegian black metal beyond recognition. The importance of Forgotten Woods to the development of the genre is absolutely incontestable, and this EP represents some of the finest material they ever recorded.

Raw, unique, and completely unrepeatable

What makes Forgotten Woods special is their ability to maintain a recognizable sound while remaining completely original. The vocals are as harsh and miserable as ever. The riffs are raw and haunting. The melodies are outstanding in their beauty. Yet after listening to Sjel Av Natten, you will never have the impression that you heard something identical to their earlier releases.

This is the main virtue of the greatest artists: to preserve the resembling sound while being original and special at the same time. Nobody has ever successfully repeated the Forgotten Woods formula. There have been attempts, but all have failed miserably. This is the genuine article.

The EP contains three original songs, two untitled bonus tracks from rare demo releases, and a strange 16-second hidden track. The title track Sjel Av Natten is a masterpiece of raw, emotional black metal, featuring some of the most beautiful guitar melodies ever written for the genre. The second song contains a melody that could only be compared to Solstafir’s “I Myself The Visionary Head” in its devastating emotional impact.

“Sjel Av Natten” is real classics of black metal and it is obligatory for listening and buying. Even if you don’t like Forgotten Woods, you should have this one at least out of regard for the great band.
