NOKTURNAL MORTUM – Verity CD (Reissue 2026)
Truth. Land. Blood. The ancient voice returns. After eight years of silence following the monumental The Voice of Steel, Ukrainian pagan black metal visionaries NOKTURNAL MORTUM unveiled Verity in 2017 — a work of staggering ambition and primal beauty that now receives its long-overdue, definitive CD reissue through Osmose Productions, complete with an expansive 36-page booklet, jewelcase packaging, and the pristine, sealed authority of a band that has never once compromised its vision.
This is not merely symphonic black metal. This is Slavonic pagan black metal elevated to its most cinematic and spiritually charged form. Drawing deeply on traditional instruments — the sopilka (flute), bandura, the resonant dulcimer, alongside evocative keyboards that summon entire landscapes — Verity immerses the listener in epic, nature-steeped soundscapes that evoke ancient myths, forgotten rituals, and the harsh, unyielding beauty of the Ukrainian homeland. The album breathes with a life of its own: forests that watch, rivers that carry wreaths of the dead, snowstorms that howl with ancestral fury.
Musically, Nokturnal Mortum weave aggressive, razor-sharp black metal with chant-like choral passages, sweeping folkloric melodies, and moments of profound introspection. The ferocity never abandons the melody, and the melody never betrays the ferocity. From the brooding invocation of “I’ll Meet You in Ancient Darkness” through the epic, multi-layered majesty of “Molfa”, the mystical darkness of “With Chort in My Bosom”, and the breathtaking “Song of the Snowstorm”, each track unfolds like a chapter from a forgotten epic. The haunting interpretation of “Lyre” (a cover of Ukrainian folk legends Komu Vnyz) stands as a testament to the band’s deep roots in native tradition, while “Night of the Gods” delivers a climactic, almost transcendental fusion of war and worship.
The album’s journey closes with the ethereal “Where Do the Wreaths Float Down the River?” — a haunting outro that leaves the listener suspended between this world and the one that lies beyond the mist. Across twelve tracks, Verity balances ferocity with introspection, tradition with innovation, and the personal with the mythic. It is a work that demands full immersion.
For those who understand that the black arts are not just sound, but soil, blood, and memory. A cornerstone of modern pagan black metal, now preserved in its most complete physical form.
