Belus marks the monumental return of Burzum after years of silence. This is a more mature and restrained release, yet firmly rooted in Varg Vikernes’ signature sound. The album masterfully blends atmospheric and pagan black metal, built around a deep concept inspired by Norse mythology.
The material is melodic and hypnotic, mostly mid-paced, and driven by iconic tremolo riffs with minimal use of blast beats. Vocally, instead of traditional screams, Varg employs his characteristic hissing style, complemented by occasional clean, spoken passages.
Compared to the classic 90s releases, Belus offers a more reflective, almost meditative atmosphere. Diverse yet repetitive, it stands as an underrated but vital chapter in the Burzum discography — a strong and mature comeback for the legendary project.
