“Filosofem” is unequivocally one of the most important and influential black metal albums ever released. The instrumentation is minimalistic yet fiercely precise. Iconic, melancholic guitar riffs on tracks like “Dunkelheit” (Burzum) and the relentless, driving dissonance of “Jesu Død” create an overbearing, rain-like wall of fuzz. Varg Vikernes’ underproduced, distorted vocals blend seamlessly with the music, perfectly complementing lyrical themes of darkness, nihilism, and paganism.
Founded in 1991 in Bergen, Norway, Burzum quickly became a pillar of the extreme metal underground. “Filosofem” (derived from the Latin word for ‘philosopher’) crosses boundaries between raw Black Metal, Dark Ambient, and Dungeon Synth.
