For years, one of the greatest mysteries of the extreme metal underground was why this split was issued together on vinyl, but divided into separate releases on CD. In 2025, the legendary label Norma Evangelium Diaboli (NoEvDia) finally corrects this historical anomaly, bringing together these two towering French entities on a single silver disc in a premium 4-panel digipak.

The first half of this release belongs to DEATHSPELL OMEGA and their monumental 22-minute composition, “Chaining the Katechon”. This track is a beast of intellectual complexity, showcasing the band’s labyrinthine approach to composing and executing speedy, deathened black metal. The work seamlessly divides into linked sections of varying tempos and styles, pulling in disparate influences such as post-rock, jazz improvisation, funeral doom, and off-tune, dissonant experimentation. Driven by some of the most jaw-dropping, spontaneous, and complex drum work ever committed to tape, the track ascends to chaotic climaxes, featuring trumpet-like guitar drones and doomy codas dominated by clean, solemn vocals. Lyrically, it explores metaphysical themes of a hostile, uncaring universe.

The second half belongs to the cult, elusive French entity S.V.E.S.T. (Satanas Vobiscum Et Spiritum Tuo) and their legendary material, including “Le Diable est ma Raison”. Perfectly complementing Deathspell Omega’s avant-garde structures, S.V.E.S.T. delivers a raw, hallucinatory, and uncompromisingly hostile breed of orthodox black metal. Their performance is a shearing, razor-sharp assault on the senses, defined by penetrating, wild guitar tones and a sinister, chaotic energy that represents the absolute peak of the French underground scene of the 2000s.
