You think you know what to expect from a new Inquisition album? You would be right in most respects, but not in the ways that matter. Black Mass for a Mass Grave has every single hallmark that separated Inquisition from the entire rest of the black metal pack, but twists and perfects that formula to create something truly special.

Dagon’s iconic vocals are still here, maybe a little less froggy but absolutely and unmistakably Inquisition. It might be an unpopular opinion, but this is exactly what Abbath wishes he could sound like. The guitars are as always the star of the show: they thrash, they turn to mid tempo dirge, they break with effortless grace and fluidity.

What makes this album stand apart is the production. Inquisition have never sounded this good. There is an almost doom, stoner metal quality to the mix, especially the lead guitars. Melodic lines that could almost belong to an entirely different genre, until they suddenly twist into something fuzzy, ill defined and unfathomably sinister. The production almost transcends the musical boundaries of black metal, whilst capturing its dark essence more perfectly than almost any other release of the last 20 years.

64 minutes long, and not a single weak moment. The album flows perfectly from start to finish, never dragging, never getting weaker as it goes along. You will not be ready for it to end when it finishes. This is not just an essential Inquisition album, this is one of the greatest black metal albums of the modern era, and a genuine work of genius.
