LIFELOVER – Dekadens CD (Reissue 2024)
Suckle the sweet, black milk of regret. Serving as the perfect bridge between the critically acclaimed album Konkurs and their final masterpiece Sjukdom, Swedish avant-garde/depressive black metal pioneers LIFELOVER present their monumental 2009 EP, Dekadens. Now reissued on CD via Osmose Productions in 2024, this 7-track, 30-minute dose of audio self-destruction is a mandatory relic for anyone wandering the fringes of extreme music.
Lifelover has always stood on the absolute edge of genrification, laughing hysterically at the suffocating boundaries of black metal, doom, and “depressive” rock. On Dekadens, their erratic genius is on full display. The EP shifts wildly through a chaotic spectrum of degenerate emotions, blending melancholic black rock with go-go gothic sensibilities, spacious shoegaze, and unhinged metallic aggression. It is a record that sounds beautifully sad, plucky, cynical, and deeply unsettling all at once.
Every track on Dekadens offers a different flavor of urban decay. “Lethargy” is arguably one of the finest tracks the band ever recorded — a sublime, heart-wrenching piece of black rock that feels like a slow descent into hopeless apathy. The bizarrely upbeat, gothic-tinted “Androider” features Kim Carlsson’s signature tortured vocal garbles, while “Destination: Ingenstans” channels the best of 90s shoegaze drone, unexpectedly broken up by sultry acoustic guitars and a blistering, old-school thrash metal riff. For those seeking pure, unadulterated hostility, “Major Fuck Off” delivers a direct, venomous black metal punch straight to the jaw.
Rather than a mere stopgap, Dekadens is a fully realized, essential chapter in the Lifelover canon. It captures a band at the height of their creative eccentricity, showing no regard for conventions and delivering some of their most memorable, sorrowful melodies.
A bleak, decadent masterpiece of Swedish non-conformity. Order your copy before the void takes over.
