Profanum Aeternum: Eminence of Satanic Imperial Art is a mournful opus of five dark, majestic and infernal symphonies that completely abandon traditional black metal instrumentation in favor of something completely new.
There are no guitars here. There is no bass. The standard “metal” sound is replaced entirely by symphonic orchestra instruments – piano, violins, strings – combined with obscure ambient touches and dark vocal arrangements. The result is something that the band rightfully calls Ambient Infernal Symphony, and it sounds like absolutely nothing else in the entire genre.
This is the perfect proof that black metal does not need fully distorted shrieking guitars to be wicked, terrifying and absolutely dark. The use of reverb across every element creates a somber aura that feels like walking through a dense forest where moonlight barely illuminates your path. The atmosphere is suffocating, melancholic and genuinely devastating from start to finish.
