In the history of extreme metal, few records carry as much weight as ROOT’s Zjevní. It would not be misguided to call them “Bathory from behind the Iron Curtain.” Born from a scene persecuted by the communist Czechoslovakian government, where obtaining instruments or studio time was an act of rebellion in itself, ROOT created something truly sinister despite—or perhaps because of—the misery surrounding them.

The Sound of the Grey East

This is not polished Western metal. This is primitive black metal at its most authentic. The riffs are rotten, the atmosphere is suffocatingly cold, and the production captures the harsh reality of the era. It is an evil, individualistic creation that defines what it meant to play extreme music behind the Iron Curtain.
