TORTORUM – Katabasis (Digipak CD)
Katabasis is not just Tortorum’s best album, it is widely considered by many to be one of the single greatest black metal albums of the entire 2010s. An absolute masterpiece of vicious, ritualistic and atmospheric black metal, that has only grown in reputation and status in the decade since its release.
Formed by Paimon (Skyggen) of legendary Polish band Thunderbolt, after his time as a member of Gorgoroth, together with Barghest and Specter. Katabasis takes the foundation laid by Extinctionist and elevates it in every single possible way. Recorded and produced at Necromorbus Studios, this album occupies the same perfect sweet spot between vicious aggression and cold, majestic atmosphere occupied by the best works of Ondskapt, Ofermod, Watain and classic Dissection.
This is not generic retro black metal. Razor sharp riffing, perfectly controlled chaos, masterful dynamic songwriting and hidden layers of melody that reveal themselves only after repeated listens. There are no weak tracks, no filler, and it all culminates in Beyond the Earth and Air and Sun – often rightfully described as Tortorum’s own “Waters of Ain”, and one of the greatest closing tracks ever written for a black metal album.
This is absolutely a must have album. Vinyl or CD, get a copy asap.
