Goatcraft Torment is not just the best album Urgehal ever recorded. This is the most honest album in the entire history of Black Metal. Urgehal never pretended to be anything they were not. They did not pretend to be deep philosophers. They did not pretend to be scary. They just put on spikes, painted their faces, got completely wasted and played the most direct, aggressive and fun Black Thrash that ever came out of Norway.

And most importantly: they had solos. At a time when every other black metal band considered playing a solo a mortal sin, Urgehal put an absolute shred fest in every single song. Go listen to Satanic Black Metal In Hell and tell me that is not the greatest thing you have ever heard.

Other things that separate this album from 99% of all black metal of this era: you can hear the bass. Actually hear it. The bass is perfectly clear in the entire mix. The production is perfect: raw but completely clean, without that stupid fuzz most bands added on purpose to look underground. The drums gallop, the riffs stick in your head for weeks, the vocals are perfectly rough.
